Tompkins County Sheriff's Office
NYLegislature voted 12-1 to end contract after loss of confidence in vendor
“They're like, over 70 grand for one. So at best, we maybe can get two, and then we can tow them anywhere and use them in hot spots that we need.”
— Sheriff Derek Osborne (on replacement technology)
The Tompkins County Legislature voted 12-1 at a special meeting on April 16, 2026 to terminate the sheriff office’s Flock Safety contract by May 31. Legislators cited loss of confidence in the vendor and misalignment with county values. The sheriff’s office is pivoting to mobile speed-enforcement trailers and has resubmitted a GIVE grant application excluding Flock for the next cycle. The move follows the City of Ithaca’s March termination.
